LEARN A LITTLE MORE ABOUT SADDLEWORTH
Saddleworth, a group of villages tucked into the lush south Pennines on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, has become the sexy – and less twee – alternative to Cheshire for those working in Manchester or West Yorkshire but wanting country life with character. Only half an hour from the city, this is brass band country (the film, “Brassed Off” was shot here). It has stunning landscape – high moorland, rivers, reservoirs and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Saddleworth has over 500 listed buildings and a Roman fort. click on a picture to see it full size

ATTRACTIONS
Rich local traditions: Whit Friday walks and open air band contests; the Longwood Thump (involving a 20ft high decorated rushcart and crowds of Morris dancers); arts and music festivals; regular markets – flea, farmers and French. Great pubs, and you could run into Manchester footballers or TV stars. Media folk abound in the area.

THINGS TO DO
Walk the Pennine Way, rock-climb on the edge of the Peak District, walk to Indian Head from Dovestone's Reservoir or cruise on the canal. There are horse trails, fishing and sailing reservoirs, golf courses, gyms and swimming pools. Artists, cyclists and twitchers love the place. Indoors there’s the Uppermill museum and art gallery, loads of pubs with music and a theatre in Delph.
